The Definition of the Phrase Slut Shaming
The Definition of the Phrase Slut Shaming ÃâSlut shaming is the deliberate act of calling a woman a slut, a whore or impugning her character in sexual terms in order to embarrass, humiliate, intimidate, degrade or shame her for actions or behaviors that are a normal part of female sexuality. Although the act of slut-shaming is not exclusive to either gender, females of every age from girls to adults often engage in slut-shaming to put down or express contempt for another female. Slut-shaming is often associated with mean girl behavior but is not restricted to that age group. A slut-shaming story from a personal blog illustrates how this practice can happen in the unlikeliest of settings: [O]ne church member...called another member a slut because of the latterââ¬â¢s shoes (which had been part of a Halloween costume) with stiletto heels. It was a joke...[which] hints at the truth...that even if you are a good Christian, if you also happen to be wearing certain clothes, you will be stigmatized sexually if you are a woman. Slut shaming entered the public consciousness in 2010 due to two separate events: the suicide of Phoebe Prince, a high school student who was so humiliated by her classmates that she hanged herself; and the 2010 midterm election in which two Congressional candidates, Christine ODonnell, and Krystal Ball, were attacked by the website Gawker which published an anonymous tell-all about a night spent with ODonnell and candid photos of Ball at a Christmas party posing with sex toys. Slut shaming was also depicted in the CBS series The Good Wife when a female candidates breast augmentation surgery was revealed by her male opponent. In the episode which originally aired November 9, 2010, the candidate directly addressed the situation and revealed she was a breast cancer survivor who had kept her double mastectomy a secret and was having breast reconstructive surgery following cancer treatment.

Uses of Dispose
Uses of Dispose Uses of Dispose Uses of Dispose By Maeve Maddox Ed Buckner writes: In my work, people often use the word dispose when referring to solid waste. Ã My issue is that many people want to append the preposition of to the word dispose as in, the company disposed of the hazardous waste. This does not seem correct to me, yet I have had wordsmiths in the office correct my writing to include disposed of. One would not say transported of the waste or stored of the waste, yet people insist upon saying disposed of the waste. Am I wrong here or is it a case of an error becoming the standard through constant incorrect use? The verb dispose can be used either transitively or intransitively. When used transitively, it does not take a preposition. Used intransitively, it often does. As an transitive verb (a verb that governs an object), dispose can mean to place, to put away: The company disposed the waste in drums placed in several buildings. The child disposed the toy soldiers about the carpet and under the table. As an intransitive verb dispose can take a preposition. to dispose with: put into a settled state I want to dispose with this lawsuit once and for all. to dispose of: get rid of We hired Acme Garbage to dispose of our solid waste Dispose can also be used intransitively without a preposition as in the proverb Man proposes; God disposes. When the meaning is to get rid of, dispose needs the of. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! DOES THE PRACTISE OF HRM GIVE ORGANISATIONS A COMPETITIVE EDGE Essay
DOES THE PRACTISE OF HRM GIVE ORGANISATIONS A COMPETITIVE EDGE - Essay Example Business organizations has been apt in declaring their commitment in treating employees as valued assets and a source of competitive advantage yet empirically "organisational reality appears 'hard' with an emphasis on the quantitative, calculative, and strategic aspects of managing a head count" (Gill 1999). Empirical evidences on the effectiveness of human resource management as a source of competitive advantage have been widely documented. During 1995, the study of Huselid conducted in almost 1000 US players in various industries concluded that "the magnitude of the returns for investments in high performance work is substantial." Furthermore, "a one percent standard deviation increase in such practices is associated with 7.05% decrease in labour turnover, and on a per employee basis US$27, 044 more in sales, and US$18,641 and US$3,814 more in market value and profits, respectively" (Huselid 1995). This study has been one of the earliest and most extensive works linking HRM to actual business performance. The findings has been strongly supportive on the view that HRM provides companies with competitive edge because HR practices increased employees' trust, job satisfaction, and commitment while eliminating work intensification and reducing stress. In the United Kingdom, wide array of case studies have also been documented which strongly links HRM to organisational performance. In 1997, Patterson et al released the results of their survey utilizing 67 manufacturing industries. This has been published by the Institute of Personnel Development which is currently known as CIPD and highly quoted for its enlightening insights. The study has put forward the "importance of HRM as a driver of, and contributor to, improved performance" (Patterson et al 1997). It is also interesting to note that this study asserts that "HRM had a greater impact on productivity and profits than of other factors including strategy, research and development, and quality" (Patterson et al 19997). Going further, Patterson et al, uncovers that while 8% in variations from profitability is explained by R&D, 17% is explained by HRM practices. This is highly significant compared to the 2% and 1% garnered by the strategy and quality, respectively. The study of Guest et al in 2000 also stresses the importance of human resource management practices in organisational performance. This research links specific human resource practices like job security, recruitment and selection, and training and development with performance outcomes including financial performance, quality, and productivity. It has been uncovered that 70% of the chief executives interviewed for the study asserts that their business strategy relied a lot on people as a source of competitive advantage (Guest et al 2000). On the other hand, less than half of them "felt that 'people issues' are more important than financial and marketing issues" (Guest et al 2000). This particular research opens an important field for further queries. Even though it concluded that HRM is positively correlated with performance, it has also been observed that only a small proportion of the companies considered do practice more than

The Keepers of the House Essay Example for Free
The Keepers of the House Essay There is an interesting part of history that goes unnoticed. The treatment of blacks in the South during the time of slavery plays an intricate part of Americaââ¬â¢s history, which gets frequently overlooked. The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau sheds light on this time period, following a family, living in rural Alabama in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. Grau explains this family: ââ¬Å"All in all the Howlandââ¬â¢s thrived. They farmed and hunted; they made whiskey and rum and took it to market down the Providence River to Mobile (Grau 12). The story follows three generations of the Howland family living in a community that ultimately turns on them. Grau takes inspiration from the time period along with having multiple themes to craft an interesting and impactful Pulitzer Prize novel. The Howlandââ¬â¢s were a family that lived in the same area for many years. William Howland, the fifth, lost his wife, leaving him to take care of his young daughter Abigail and a son William who dies shortly after. Abigail then marries a man who leaves her with her own daughter Abigail. Williamââ¬â¢s daughter dies and leaves him with a granddaughter to take care of. Soon after, William hires an African American, Margaret, woman as a housekeeper. Abigail talks of the lasting affects William and Margaret left on her: ââ¬Å"I am caught and tangled around by their doings. It is as if their lives left a weaving of indivisible threads in the air of this house, of this town, of this county. And I stumbled and fell into themâ⬠(Grau 6). Around town, she became know as his mistress and mother of his other children. In secret, they marry for the childrenââ¬â¢s sake. Later, after the children grew up, they were sent up north so they could live as normal white citizens. Abigail later marries a man named John Tolliver who aligns with the Klu Klux Klan during his run for governor. Robert, the eldest of the Howland brothers was outraged by this and released an article hurting Tolliverââ¬â¢s cam paign. Tolliver and Abigail end their marriage near after. Back where the Howlandââ¬â¢s live, the town is still outraged about the marriage between William Howland and the African American homemaker Margaret. Even though both of them had died, the town gathered and lit the barn on fire and killed many of their livestock. Grau writes, ââ¬Å"The Howland they wanted was dead. His Negro wife was dead. Their children disappeared. And so they were wrecking the only thing that was left of him, of them. First the barn and then the houseâ⬠(Grau 285). The novel comes full circle when Abigail gets revenge on the townââ¬â¢s people and ruins the entire local economy along with the town. It seems as though Shirley Ann Grau took inspiration from the history of this time period along with what it may have been like growing up at that time in that place to set a scene of exactly what this time period may have looked and felt like. Showing what the Howland family went through, along with the way they were treated set a scene for not only a family struggle but a national struggle as well. The way she describes the scenery, puts you there in at time. Grau writes, ââ¬Å"November evenings are quiet and still and dry. The frost-stripped trees and the bleached grasses glisten and shine in the small light (Grau 1). As well as the scenery, Grau uses her deep characters in the story to highlight how people were affect by this issue. Abigail is the main character narrating this story. Grau tells the happenings of this time through her eyes as well as through the actions of William Howland, Margaret, John Tolliver and Robert Howland. Each of these characters makes an impact on this story, as well as the main character Abigail. For example, Abigailââ¬â¢s husband John Tolliver shapes her character into a tough skinned woman. He treats her unfairly as a wife but she learns from that and takes it with her. Grau writes, ââ¬Å"I knew what John meant: I was the perfect wife for a candidate. He had chosen and trained me well (Grau 257). This marriage helps toughen up Abigail for the future as she fights for her family. There are two main themes taken from this novel: racism and family. Racism is a clear theme throughout this novel given the time period and scenario that takes place with a secret African American maid, wife and mother. Racism is shown through the scenario when Tolliver bashes blacks during his campaign for governor. Tolliver talks about African Americans in vulgar and horrible ways. When talking about William and Margaretââ¬â¢s children he says, ââ¬Å"He couldnââ¬â¢t let his children be bastards, even if their mother was a Negroâ⬠(Grau 271). This is just one example of the way African Americans are talked about at this time. Also, the area where the Howlandââ¬â¢s live, do not take the news of William marrying Margaret lightly just because she is African American. Family is another theme portrayed in this novel. The Howlandââ¬â¢s go through trials and tribulations that test their family as a whole. For example, like stated before, the town completely turns on the Howlandââ¬â¢s when they find that William and Margaret had married. Abigail takes a stand for her family and fights back. She stands up for her family and the house they have lived in for so many years. Grau shows just how much Abigail cares for her family and home. She writes, ââ¬Å"Child, I thought you donââ¬â¢t even know, its possible to love a house and land that much (Grau 274). These two themes play a role in teaching readers about the time period and the struggles it caused. The Keepers of the House by Shirley Ann Grau sheds light on an issue sometimes forgotten about in society today: the treatment of African Americans in the 1960ââ¬â¢s. Using things like history from this time and family themes, Grau establishes that this issue was serious and did exist. Abigail Howland ultimately stands up for what she believes in and protects her family but also puts a small dent in this civil rights movement. As her journey comes to an end she says, ââ¬Å"I stood on that cold windy grass and saw what I had done. I saw that it wasnââ¬â¢t bravery or hate. It was, like my grandfather said, necessity. And thatââ¬â¢s pretty poor comfort but at times its all youââ¬â¢ve gotâ⬠(Grau 290). Abigailââ¬â¢s narration of her familyââ¬â¢s story along with the use of strong and deep characters, shape for a wonderful Pulitzer Prize novel.

Alicia Martinez Murder Essay
Alicia Martinez murder: Did Edward Romero chop up some body parts in a blender? Denver Westword, Thursday, Mar. 8 2012 Alicia Martinez disappeared on October 24, 2010, and shortly thereafter, Denver Police arrested Edward Romero for first degree murder. According to police Romero allegedly killed Martinez by shooting her twice in the head, then dismembering her body even going so far as to put some small pieces in a blender. Some parts were never found and others missing skin. Martinez was ultimately identified through the use of dental records. Francesca Pagliasotti, Romeroââ¬â¢s girlfriend was accused of being an accessory to first-degree murder. Pagliasotti wasnââ¬â¢t home when Romero allegedly killed Martinez, but upon her arrival, she found him in the garage, chopping up the girlsââ¬â¢ body. The morning after, Pagliasotti, who has two small children with Romero, got out a mop and a bucket and started cleaning up Martinezââ¬â¢s blood. (Roberts, 2012) The actus reus or criminal act of this crime has to be Romero shooting Martinez twice in the head and murdering her. Romero must have had a reason, in his mind, to kill Martinez. Maybe she saw him do something or he sexually assaulted her and didnââ¬â¢t want any witnesses. Either way the act of killing her was the actus reus. After Romero shot her and realized what he had done was not only wrong but could land him in prison for the rest of his life, he had to dispose of the body. No body, no crime. Romero decides the best course of action is to dismember the body in the garage. Not only dismember the body but put some smaller pieces in a blender. Romero had the knowledge that he had committed a crime or mens rea. Romeroââ¬â¢s girlfriend Pagliasotta caught him in the act of dismembering a human body in his garage. Clearly what he had done in killing the girl and what he was doing with getting rid of the body was illegal. Yet Pagliasotta did not call the police or run and get help. She instead helps Romero clean up the crime scene and act like nothing happened. Pagliasotta has knowledge or mens rea of the crime. After having knowledge of the crime she did not report the crime to the authorities, this is actus reus or the criminal act. If Romero would have shot the victim and not have known that it would harm her then there would have not been a crime. There has to be the concurrence of actus reus and mens rea together for a crime to occur. The fact that he knew he was hurting Martinez when he shot her is the concurrence and ultimately the crime. Romeroââ¬â¢s girlfriend knew that he had committed a crime. She knew that he had killed someone and that he had dismembered a body to try to cover up a crime scene. Pagliasotta knowingly helped him cover up that crime scene without alerting the authorities. This is the concurrence and ultimately her crime. This is why she is accused of accessory to first-degree murder (Roberts, 2012).

or offensive jokes. The fancy racism is openly declared and hostile.â⬠(Schuman 155) I think that Cahill makes a legit argument. People experience racism everyday, whether it is noticed, unnoticed, intentional, unintentional, personal, or impersonal. Stereotypes are given to each race, and you cannot help but believe them at times. I think plain racism occurs more on a daily basis than fancy racism does. People do not even realize that when they shy away or avoid talking to someone of a different race, that they are committing plain racism. You would think it is because of who that person actually is, but you really do not even know them and are judging them by their outer image. Free Essays on Race Free Essays on Race Race ââ¬â a sense of identity What is the definition of race? We divide people into groups by their skin color - black, yellow and whites. Maybe it is time to change this. The Swedish population and other populations as well, are nowadays a mixed group of people. White people are black people's neighbors, doctors and friends. With a growing unity between the all races, why does racism continue? The answer is because of prejudices. Racism and stereotyping are issues that date back to many years ago. Some prejudices come from experience, such as unpleasant or baffling encounter with someone from another ethnic group. Many prejudices are passed along from parents to children, sometimes without either generation having ever met the object of their dislike. Some come from the images that the media convey. In fact we are not different, instead we are judgmental and we discriminate and segregate. Racism is a word that means a lot of things to many people. To some, that word is the descr iption of a way of life, to others it is a repulsive term that represents closed-mindedness. What is race? The biologically answer is easy, the other answers are not. You can be black in your heart or mind even though your skin color is white or yellow, or the other way around. You do not necessarily have to act white because that is the color of your skin. You can choose how you want to be viewed and who you are in a sense of identity. On the other hand people can not choose their background or culture, what you have inherited is there to stay. This is important to remember. We are all unique individuals among races and we are also equal.... Free Essays on Race Race Today Whether one believes it or not, they are bound by the ties of race. Biological and social interactions are the two undermining factors of our place in society. We must ââ¬Å"define race according to its social historyâ⬠and these social factors in turn, form the boundaries that we have been calling race. Race being continuous and dynamic in nature, helps determine different cultures and classifications in America. Race is not a thing but rather a cultural context within groups, that reflect ones being or perhaps who they are in society. The way we make decisions in our life reflect our upbringing as well as the environment we reside. Racial classifications are communally and politically determined, but race by way of racism is a determinant of social class, economic status and health outcomes. Race had to be formed by someone who created different classifications. ââ¬Å"How do you make the point that it is real but doesn't exist (Harold P. Freeman )?â⬠Indeed, we a re socially constructed but I feel that there are biological attractions - an involuntarily force that brings people together which determines their race. For example, does the involuntary love expressed between two people stem from historical interactions or our social groups or perhaps from a feeling that unconsciously brings the two together? I would like to explain assimilation and how two examples show assimilation resulting in positive and negative outcomes. No matter how ââ¬Å"raceâ⬠is present, thereââ¬â¢s no choice but to assimilate or to resist assimilation relative to a social environment or group. Assimilating to particular environments can be defined by the borrowing of an idea, style or perhaps the borrowing of that idea and eventually becoming part of that particular idea - because one is continuously exposed they have more tendency to change. Assimilation is the process by which minorities gradually adopt patterns of the dominant culture. Dif... Free Essays on Race In The Importance of Being Earnest, Pride and Prejudice, and ââ¬Å"The Rape of the Lockâ⬠, they are all told from different prospectives and social classes, but in contrast all share the same viewsmarriage to a man of great wealth and well established standing would raise a womanââ¬â¢s social ranking in society. This overview of marriage shows in the attitudes of women during this time period. Batting eyelashes and making oneself wanted without seeming trampy or coquettish was the acceptable flirting technique of the early 1900ââ¬â¢s. This instillment of thought was put into the womenââ¬â¢s minds as young children, which grew and developed as the young lady matured and approached to the direction of marriage. In The Importance of Being Earnest, initially, Lady Bracknell is in control over Jack/Earnest and Gwendolenââ¬â¢s relationship. In Gwendolenââ¬â¢s opinion, her mother watches over her and treats her like a young child, trying to protect her from everything negative. Lady Bracknell says, ââ¬Å"Pardon me, you are not engaged to anyone. When you become engage to someone, I, or your father, should his health permit, will inform you of the fact...â⬠(p.720-Act1) Here, she justifies that not only is she in control of her daughterââ¬â¢s life, but eventually the outcome of Jackââ¬â¢s love life. Then, after Lady Bracknell established who was in charge of the situation, it is up to Jack/Earnest to convince her to let him marry Gwendolen. Gwendolen says, ââ¬Å"Earnest, we may never be married. From the expression on Mamaââ¬â¢s face I fear we never shall...â⬠(p.742-Act1) Thus, Gwendolen makes it clear to Jack that although they want to take their relationship to the next level, her mother is the main obstacle between them that prevents this from happening. Last, Jack fights to save his relationship with the love of his life by following all of the rules of Lady Bracknell, in hopes that she would change her mind about him. Jack says, ââ¬Å"May I ask ... Free Essays on Race I believe that ââ¬Å"Race" is an arbitrary and meaningless concept because race among humans does not exist. As we come together and break apart according to the movement of human populations, we create a variety of differences among the human species. Racism, racial stereo types, race and cultural prejudices, and anti-Semitism, cultural and racial bigotry result in people being attacked, abused, oppressed, or enslaved. I feel that affinity groups should be allowed in school systems and else where. It is simply human nature to feel a natural connection towards others that look like them, come from similar environments or share a common past. I have noticed that people are becoming less understanding and less empathetic towards people that are ââ¬Å"not like themâ⬠. While there seem to be genuine relationships between blacks and whites, some whites, including myself, hesitate to talk about race for fear of being taken the wrong way. I sometimes find myself being overly ca utious with some things I say because I am afraid it may be taken out of context and called racist. I believe that affinity groups are not "reverse racismâ⬠or "segregation." I think everyone should be allowed the right to form these groups. It is a place to come together and share experiences and express opinions, prejudice, or not, for mutual support or simply to just meet new people. People need some time and space apart from the central group just to let go and be themselves. If people coming together for group support makes someone feel excluded then possibly there is something missing from their life life or cultural associations.... How to write a tender - Emphasis
How to write a tender How to write a tender The key to writing a good tender is to be specific and detail how your capabilities match the clients exact requirements. You donââ¬â¢t have to be arrogant to sell your firm. Never kick off the tender by saying how great you are. Instead, show that youââ¬â¢ve listened to the clientââ¬â¢s needs and found them the right solution. The way to do this is to identify and concentrate on the ââ¬Ëwin themesââ¬â¢ ââ¬â the issues the client is most concerned with. Hopefully, you will have had an opportunity to ask them about these. But invitations to tender usually give you clues about what they are and often state them directly (ââ¬Ëtenderers must have â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢). Win themes could include things like: completing the job within a tight time schedule attracting quality subcontractors project-management skills guarantees to stay on schedule health and safety procedures. To some extent, most tenders should cover all these issues ââ¬â among others. But make sure you focus more on the ones your client is particularly interested in. And then show how your firm can meet their needs. One way of doing this with more complex tenders is to draw up a compliance matrix to make sure youââ¬â¢ve got a solution for everything the tender asks for. This could give you the edge if you include it in the tender document itself. Some people in the construction industry argue that tenders are usually won on price alone. No-one can dispute how important price is, and sometimes it may be the main factor (making it a win theme, of course). But never ignore the fact that whoever is in charge of the tendering process is also very interested in your firm ââ¬â and what you can deliver over and above your competitors. Focus on these and you may well reduce the clientââ¬â¢s sensitivity to price. Unique selling points This doesnââ¬â¢t mean you should slate your competitors in your tender ââ¬â far from it. But it does mean you should have a clear idea of what your firmââ¬â¢s USPs (unique selling points) are. Some examples might include: quality of finish and ability to deal with snagging quickly getting the job done within a tight timeframe and budget (without jeopardising quality) regular progress reports and updates to client client-satisfaction record and percentage of repeat business. Make it clear why they should choose you. Donââ¬â¢t just make vague and clichà ©d claims such as ââ¬Ëwe deliver high-quality work within tight schedulesââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëwe have considerable experience in the management of new office fit outs and refurbishmentsââ¬â¢. You need to substantiate these kinds of claims with supporting evidence. For example, ââ¬ËWe have delivered 90 per cent of our jobs within budget and 60 per cent or our business comes from existing clientsââ¬â¢. Include a breakdown of all the various aspects of the work involved in the project. And donââ¬â¢t leave out things because youââ¬â¢re not sure if the client wants them or because you canââ¬â¢t price them accurately at this stage; it will look as though youââ¬â¢ve overlooked them. If necessary, put them in with a ââ¬ËTBCââ¬â¢. Donââ¬â¢t make assumptions. Just because the client or person managing the tender knows you, that doesnââ¬â¢t mean you can leave out vital information about your firm. What if there are some other crucial ââ¬Ëinfluencersââ¬â¢ reading your tender who know nothing about you? Finally, always go through your tender face to face if the tender process allows it. That way you can sort out any sticking points. Robert Ashton, Chief Executive, Emphasis, business writing specialists. Want to learn how to win business? Rationale and Teaching Episode - Assignment Example These cultural differences and preferences affect effective curriculum implementation in Australia. Curriculum is able to mobilize understanding of culture in Australian Society through various ways which are practical in nature. This is because it is able to instill good schooling system standards in an effort to impart knowledge to the Australian Indigenous population (Phillips & Lampert, 2005).Since some cultures are associated with bad habits or practices that does promote crime rate. For instance, alcohol is known to be a common antecedent to offending among the Indigenous Australians. This indicates that it is a factor contributing to the high crime rate of all the indigenous Australian people. The crime culture has led to the establishment of committee whose role amongst others include having initiatives on ways of diverting any cultural practice that promotes crime in one way or the other. The drop in crime and certain cultural practices enables good environment for promoting education standards. The system of education must support this in order to strengthen the population. Teachers have a daunting tusk in playing a crucial role to ensure that existing curriculum system is implemented effectively across the divide (Phillips & Lampert, 2005). In identification of multicultural classroom setting, the international students, indigenous Australian and non indigenous Australians come together irrespective of the cultural differences among them. The teacher must have a definite approach to the scenario in away of implementing the curriculum effectively (Clancy, 2004). In this case, there are several individual differences some of which includes personal interest, gender, nationality, hobbies among others. Curriculum enhances cultural understanding and confirms that the presence of unique identities within several families from different communities which contributes to the greater concept of being Australian .All these need to be integra ted in the cultural teaching (Clancy, 2004). Make up of classes should promote social cohesion plus cultural diversification of various communities. Emphasis on cultural diversity should also exist in monoculture classes just as it exists in multicultural classroom setting. There should also be an emphasis on the Australian identity. When the name of the greater nation is shared among different personalities, this enhances unity and promotes social understanding of people of different cultures (Bell, 1998). In the school setting, the most appropriate thing to be done is to expand studentsââ¬â¢ knowledge on their identity. The students should also be urged to develop tolerance and understanding amongst themselves and
